About the Edition

1895: London"s scared. A killer haunts the city"s streets. The poor are hungry; crime bosses are taking control; the police force stretched to breaking point. While the rich turn to Sherlock Holmes, the celebrated private detective rarely visits the densely populated streets of South London, where the crimes are sleazier and the people are poorer. In a dark corner of Southwark, victims turn to a man who despises Holmes, his wealthy clientele and his showy forensic approach to crime: Arrowood self-taught psychologist, occasional drunkard and private investigator. When a man mysteriously disappears and Arrowood"s best lead is viciously stabbed before his eyes, he and his sidekick Barnett face their toughest quest yet: to capture the head of the most notorious gang in London.

Arrowood by Laura McHugh is a Spiegel & Grau publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Arrowood lives up to the hype as a good old fashioned Gothic mystery!/5. In the book, Sherlock Holmes is a real person who keeps making headlines with the cases that he solves, much to the chagrin of William Arrowood.

Arrowood (the "guvner", as his friend and cohort Norman Barnett calls him). Arrowood despises Holmes because of his wealthy clientele, and because of his flashy ways/5. But Arrowood is a strong and well-written book that I thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end, just like The Weight of Blood.

It is an old-fashion, southern gothic mystery that is cool, clever, and chilling equal parts Carson McCullers and Flannery O’Connor, with a strong dose of Gillian Flynn thrown in/5().

Arrowood is a powerful and resonant novel that examines the ways in which our lives are shaped by memory. As with her award-winning debut novel, The Weight of Blood, Laura McHugh has written a thrilling novel in which nothing is as it seems, and in which our longing for the past can take hold of the present in insidious and haunting ways.

While Holmes may not be that person, Arrowood is more than willing to be that person. This Victorian noir detective story will have you interested from start to finish. You have got to pick up the book that The Times of London named to their top summer books list and is calling a novel that is crackling with ‘energy and wit’.

Book Review: Mick Finlay: Arrowood. June 30th, by The Baker Street Babes. When I first read about Arrowood as an anti-Holmes, I was intrigued.

Of course Sherlock Holmes himself constantly criticizes fictional detectives, and Mick Finlay set out to create a character who has his own methods of solving cases, and who happens to severely dislike Sherlock Holmes.

Arrowood refuses to use Holmes methods for solving cases, relying instead on reading emotions and expressions. Characters are well drawn and you get an excellent period feel from the book.

I found this an excellently plotted book and look forward to 4/5(). "How I loved this book. Arrowood is an almost infuriatingly absorbing, awkward and brilliant character. I wanted to start his next mystery with him as soon as I'd finished his first.

More than that, Arrowood feels strangely like he's always existed, we're only now being treated to an : MIRA Books. Even worse, Arrowood’s sleuthing skills, at least in this first recorded case, seem limited to antagonizing Inspector Petleigh, repeatedly butting heads with Stanley Cream, who owns the Barrel of Beef, and calling in an expert to identify the bullet the dead barmaid was clutching in.
